Statement by U.S. Ambassador David C. Mulford on Ronald Reagan

June 07, 2004

Former President Ronald Reagan's passing on June 5 brings to closure the life of one of modern America's greatest leaders. Ronald Reagan rose from humble beginnings in Dixon, Illinois, to stardom in Hollywood movies, to two-terms as Governor of the State of California, and ultimately as a visionary two-term President of the United States.

Ronald Reagan's leadership brought optimism, humanity and respect for all Americans to the White House and conveyed his vision in a manner that will be remembered and cherished by all Americans and by America's friends for years to come. Having served under President Reagan for five years, I can attest to his vision, his wisdom, and to his sunny optimism in matters of both State and common humanity.

Ronald Reagan also played a special role in the strengthening of US-India relations. Not letting years of irritating estrangement caused by the Cold War get in the way, Ronald Reagan created friendly and productive relationships with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, which opened new opportunities for expanded cooperation and trade between our two nations. The year 1985, the fifth year of Ronald Reagan's Presidency, was named the "Year of India" in the United States. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi made an historic address to the joint Houses of Congress, and a massive cultural exhibit from India toured America.

He also laid a strong foundation for U.S.-India cooperation in science and technology - the kind of strategic, futuristic vision so characteristic of this man. President Reagan and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi launched the US-India Science and Technology Initiative (STI) in 1982, which was extended by President Reagan and Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1985.

The US Embassy will welcome the public to sign its Ronald Reagan condolence book at the American Center at 24 Kasturba Gandhi Marg on June 8, 9 and 10 between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.

The American community in India joins people around the world in mourning the loss of President Ronald Reagan.
