Statement by Ambassador David C. Mulford on the U.S-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Initiative
September 6, 2008
New Delhi – Ambassador David C. Mulford welcomed the September 6, 2008 consensus of the Nuclear Suppliers Group and congratulated the Government and people of India on the historic agreement ending India's nuclear isolation.
"This is a triumphant day for India. The Nuclear Suppliers Group consensus reached in Vienna today is the culmination of years of hard work and cooperation between India and the United States to bring India into the global civil nuclear mainstream. I would like to recognize the vision and dedication of President Bush and Prime Minister Singh in achieving this remarkable breakthrough. Today's agreement on a waiver for India will strengthen global nonproliferation. It will also permit India to address its critical energy requirements and contribute importantly to protecting our global environment. We will now move forward to accomplish the final step with our Congress," commented the Ambassador.
