Nonimmigrant Visas

Apply for a Visa

Non-Indian & Non-Bhutanese Citizens

If you are not an Indian or Bhutanese citizen, you may or may not require a U.S. visa to seek entry the U.S. to carry out the purpose of your travel. The first question you must answer is whether you are from a country that participates in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Please examine the table below. Once you have found the answer to this question you should consider one or other of the application processes given below.

Countries who participate in the VWP:

Andorra Iceland Norway
Australia IrelandPortugal
AustriaItaly San Marino
Belgium Japan Singapore
Brunei Liechtenstein Slovenia
Denmark Luxembourg Spain
FinlandMonaco Sweden
France the Netherlands Switzerland
Germany New Zealand United Kingdom

If your country participates in the VWP

If your country participates in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) and you have a passport that meets current requirements the purpose of your travel will control whether you require a U.S. visa. If you want to visit the U.S. for business, pleasure, or medical reasons and for 90 days or less, you do not need a U.S. visa. You travel under the VWP. If you need to go to the U.S. for other reasons, for example, education, you must apply for a U.S. visa.

If your country participates in the VWP, but you do not have a passport that meets current requirements, you cannot travel under the VWP and will need a visa to seek entry to the U.S. regardless of the purpose of your travel.

Further Instructions & Information:

  • To discover what visa you require, read Types of Visas
  • To learn about the visa application process, read Apply for a Visa
  • If you need to obtain a U.S. visa, book a visa interview appointment online through VFS, but note that when you book online you must select "A resident of India/Bhutan" and the appropriate "State of Residence" when prompted
  • For latest information about the VWP, please visit the Department of State's VWP web page
  • If you are from a VWP country and are in India or Bhutan with an urgent need to travel to the U.S., but do not have a passport that meets current requirements, contact the U.S. Embassy or a U.S. Consulate General. Please state you are a "third country national" when you phone or email the U.S. Embassy or a U.S. Consulate

If your country does not participate in the VWP

If you are a Canadian citizen in most situations you do not require a visa to enter the U.S., but you are required, as of the January 23, 2007, to present a valid passport or other accepted document that establishes your identity and citizenship when you travel by air to the U.S. For more information, click here.

If you are not a Canadian citizen and your country does not participate in the VWP, you must apply for a visa to seek entry to the U.S. to carry out the purpose of your travel.
