Ambassador's Remarks: 1, 2 | U.S. Ambassador to India David C. Mulford and Indian Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon signed an historic new Fulbright agreement in New Delhi on Friday, July 4, 2008. This new agreement doubles the size of the exchange program to approximately USD 5 million (Rs. 21.37 crore) and makes India and the United States full partners in the program. Reflecting this new partnership, scholarships awarded under this program will be known as Fulbright-Nehru Scholarships. The agreement was signed in the presence of U.S. Representatives Gary Ackerman (D-NY), Russ Carnahan (D-MO), Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX), Al Green (D-TX), Thad McCotter (R-MI), and Randy Neugebauer (R-TX). Since its signing by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and U.S. Ambassador Loy Henderson February 2, 1950, more than 9,800 Americans have come to India and 5,000 Indians have traveled to the U.S. as Fulbright scholars. The highlight of the evening was a performance by "The Whiffenpoofs," Yale University's all-male a cappella singing group. Press Release | U.S. Agency for International Development/India Mission Director George Deikun addresses the National Workshop on Health & Urban Poverty organized by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (MoHUPA) in New Delhi on July 2, 2008. The workshop is seeking ways of operational convergence between MoHUPA and Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in addressing the needs of the growing urban poor population in India. In his remarks, Deikun commended both ministries for their gigantic efforts to work in unison towards improving the lives of this grossly underserved community in India.
