Immigrant Visas

The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi and the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai both process immigrant visa applications. Information on immigrant visas and the immigrant visa application process are available at the travel.state.gov website. Below is information specific to India on preparing for and scheduling your visa interview.

Scheduling Your Appointment

Follow the instructions below to schedule your required appointments online:

1. If your visa interview appointment was scheduled by the National Visa Center (NVC) or the Kentucky Consular Center (KCC):
The majority of immigrant and diversity visa applicants in India have their interview appointment scheduled by NVC or KCC.  When NVC or KCC notifies you that your appointment is scheduled, download your interview instructions online. Schedule a Category 1 appointment to have your photograph and fingerprints captured at a Visa Application Center before coming to your visa interview. You are not required to schedule a separate visa interview appointment.

2. If you are a Fiancé(e) K-visa applicant:
When the Embassy/Consulate notifies you by email or letter that your petition is ready, download your interview instructions online. Schedule a Category 3 appointment to have your photograph and fingerprints captured at a Visa Application Center and to have your interview at the Embassy/ Consulate.

3. If you are applying for a returning resident (SB-1) immigrant visa:
Read the instruction available at the Department of State website before submitting your application for Returning Resident Status (Application to Determine Returning Resident Status, Form DS-117).  Schedule a Category 2 appointment to have your interview at the Embassy/ Consulate. Bring a completed copy of form DS-117.

4. If you missed your Embassy/Consulate appointment or were informed to appear for a new interview:
Schedule an Embassy/Consulate appointment by selecting a Category 3 appointment.

5. If your case retrogressed but is now current: Confirm that your priority date is now current. E-mail support-india@ustraveldocs.com for information regarding further processing of their immigrant visa case.

Fees

Required immigrant visa fees may be paid at the Embassy in cash (in U.S. dollar or Indian Rupee) or by a rupee bank draft drawn on a nationalized or foreign bank.  The bank draft must be issued in the name of “The American Embassy, New Delhi”, and should be payable in Delhi.

As the consular rate of exchange can change, check the current consular rate of exchange here the day prior to your interview to obtain the current consular rate of exchange. Please note that visa fees are not refundable

Refused or Pending Immigrant Visa Cases

Your case may be placed on hold under Section 221(g) if we determine that your visa application lacks required documentation or information or if your application requires additional administrative processing.

• If your application requires additional administrative processing, then please wait until the Embassy/Consulate contacts you with further instructions.

• If you are required to provide additional documents, submit them to one of our 11 document drop-off locations. Do not send documents to the Embassy/Consulate by mail.

• If you are requested to personally return to the Embassy/Consulate with additional documents or information, schedule a Category 2 appointment.

• If you would like to inquire about a case that has been pending over 365 days, send an email with details of the case (name of applicant and case number) to support-india@ustraveldocs.com.
