IMMIGRANT VISAS

Role of the U.S. Embassy & Consulates

The Immigrant Visa Units of the U.S. Embassy, New Delhi and U.S. consulates in Chennai and Mumbai conduct the final processing of immigrant visa applications processed through the National Visa Center (NVC) for residents of India and Bhutan.

The U.S. Embassy, New Delhi and U.S. consulates in Chennai and Mumbai also process the immigrant visa applications of beneficiaries of family-based, immediate relative petitions filed with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in New Delhi.

Applicants who reside outside of India or Bhutan should contact the embassy or consulate having jurisdiction over their place of residence for further information.

Applicants physically present in the U.S. when the petition is approved, should contact the USCIS office having jurisdiction over their residence for further information.

Scheduling of a visa interview appointment at the U.S. Embassy, New Delhi or the appropriate consulate happens once a visa application is processed. The applicant receives notification about the visa interview appointment by mail. The applicant also receives instructions about the mandatory medical examination and other requirements, if applicable.

Note: The U.S. Consulate, Kolkata only conducts the processing of immigrant visa applications for adopted children (IR-3 and IR-4 cases) and returning residents (SB-1 cases). Residents of Kolkata's consular district who apply for other immigrant visas will have the final processing of their visa applications conducted by the U.S. Consulate, Mumbai.
