C-1 Visa: Transit Aliens

Who should apply?

This visa is for a person who wants immediate transit through the U.S. on their way to or from a foreign destination.

What types are available?

  • C-1 is for all transit aliens

What must you establish as a C-1 Visa applicant?

  • Your principal purpose of your trip to the U.S. is transit
  • You will depart at the end of your authorized stay in the U.S.

Further Instructions & Information:

  • C-1 Visa holders cannot change status or extend their stay while in the U.S.
  • If you want your spouse/child to travel to the U.S. with you, apply for your visas at the same time. Book your visa interview appointments for the same day and attend your visa interview together

C-1/D Visa: Alien Crewmembers in Transit

Who should apply?

This visa is for an alien crewmember who wants immediate transit through the U.S. on their way to the vessel on which they will work.

What types are available?

  • C-1/D is for all alien crewmembers in transit

What must you establish as a C-1/D Visa applicant?

  • Your principal purpose of your trip to the U.S. is transit
  • Your credentials as a genuine crewmember and your employment is in a capacity required for the normal operation of the vessel
  • You will depart at the end of your authorized stay in the U.S.

Further Instructions & Information:

  • C-1 and D Visa holders cannot change status while in the U.S.
  • If your spouse/child needs to travel to the U.S., in most circumstances they will need a visitor visa (B Visa)
  • If you want your spouse/child to travel to the U.S. with you, apply for your visas at the same time. Book your visa interview appointments for the same day and attend your visa interview together.
