Types of Visas

K Visas: Spouse, Fiancé(e) & Children of U.S. Citizen

Who should apply?

This visa is for a person who ultimately intends to immigrate to the U.S. because of a marriage to a U.S. citizen.

What types are available?

  • K-1 is for the fiancé(e) of a U.S. citizen who has a valid I-129F petition, intends to marry within 90 days of admission to the U.S. and ultimately adjust status to a Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) based on this marriage
  • K-2 is for the child of the K-1 applicant
  • K-3 is for the spouse of a U.S. citizen who wants to enter the U.S. prior to the approval of their I-130 petition, wait for approval of their I-130 petition and then adjust status to a LPR
  • K-4 is for the child of a K-3 applicant

V Visas: Certain Spouses & Children of LPRs

Who should apply?

This visa is for the beneficiaries of F2A petitions that were filed on or before the date the Life Act of 2000 was enacted (December 21, 2000) and who have been waiting for three years or more to receive their immigrant visa.

What types are available?

  • V-1 is for a spouse of a Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) who has an F2A petition filed by the LPR
  • V-2 is for a child who has their own F2A petition filed by the LPR
  • V-3 is for child of a V-1 or V-2 applicant

  • A child is defined as below 21 years of age
