Passports

Passport Renewal for Adults

The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi allows adult passport holders to renew their U.S. passports in person or by mail (or messenger).  This renewal-by-mail service is available only for applicants who are renewing a 10-year passport.  Such applicants must use passport application form DS-82.  The Embassy reserves the right to require personal appearance with respect to any passport application.

Renewal-by-mail service is not available for the following applicants:  (i) minors, (ii) applicants seeking to replace a lost, stolen or mutilated passport, (iii) applicants renewing a 5-year passport or (iv) applicants whose passport has been expired for more than five years.  Such applicants must use Form DS-11, and must continue to appear in person.  If your previous passport was valid for 5 years, please see "Passports for Minors"

To renew your 10-year U.S. passport, please bring or send (or have a relative, friend or messenger bring) to the Embassy the following items:

  • The applicant’s most recent U.S. passport.  (This passport will be cancelled and returned by mail along with the new passport.  All valid visas in the old passport will not be cancelled.)
  • Properly completed passport application form DS-82.  The form must be signed and dated, and must include a valid telephone number (mobile or landline) and/or e-mail address in the event the Embassy needs to contact the applicant.
  • One 2-inch by 2-inch square studio-quality passport photograph with a white background.  Any other photo format cannot be accepted.
  • If the applicant’s appearance has changed significantly since the old passport was issued, a clear photocopy of some other current form of photo identification, such as a driver’s license, PIO Card, etc.
  • If the applicant’s surname has changed due to marriage, please include an original marriage certificate.
  • If applying in person, you may pay the passport fee of $75 with cash dollars, cash rupees (at the current exchange rate) or with a major U.S. credit card. If applying by mail, please submit a demand draft (similar to a U.S. cashier's check) in favor of “American Embassy, New Delhi” for US$75 or Rs. 3,750 drawn on a national bank.  Personal checks are not accepted.
  • If you want the passport returned by mail, one self-addressed stamped envelope including postage of at least Rs. 40.  (We recommend a standard business size envelope.)

The new passport, along with the cancelled old passport, will be sent via Indian registered mail.  Alternatively, the applicant can pick up the passport in person, or can designate in writing someone else (e.g., a relative, friend, driver, etc.) to pick up the completed passport in person.  The passport generally is ready for pick-up or mailing after 7 - 10 days.

If applying by mail, please send (or deliver) all of these items to the following address:

 American Citizen Services Unit
 U.S. Embassy
 Shanti Path
 Chanakya Puri
 New Delhi  -  110 021

If applying by mail, we recommend that you use Indian registered mail, or a reliable courier service, for sending in your application.  To apply in person, come to the American Citizen Services Unit via Gate 6 (the “visa gate”) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday - Friday.
