U.S. Ambassador celebrates American volunteer spirit with a visit to the Delhi Zoo

March 29, 2011 | New Delhi

To celebrate the spirit of American volunteerism and community service, U.S. Ambassador Timothy J. Roemer and his wife Sally today enjoyed a beautiful Delhi day at the Zoo with 32 children from Mrs. Roemer's "Making a Difference" English language teaching program.

While visiting the Delhi Zoo with the children, Ambassador Roemer commented:   "I want to commend this committed group of American volunteers who are giving their time, energy, and talents to nurture these children and provide them valuable English language training which offers them a brighter and more secure future in the India of tomorrow.  Volunteerism is a universal value promoted in India by Gandhiji and one of the many values we share with the people of India.  When we serve others, we can help solve problems and challenges in our communities.  As Gandhiji himself said, 'The best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others.'"

Ambassador Roemer and his wife toured the Delhi Zoo accompanied by 32 children from the "Making a Difference" program, many of whom had never had a chance to visit before.  Ambassador Roemer commented after the visit, "It was a great treat to spend such a beautiful day with this wonderful group of children, enjoying one of Delhi's magnificent sites and discovering another hidden treasure of India.  My family and I always enjoy a chance to explore more of this extraordinary country and to do it in the company of these bright and engaging children was great fun."
