Statement on the U.S. Congressional Delegation

NEW DELHI -- Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Dennis Hastert (R-IL), accompanied by a bipartisan group of United States Congressmen including Michael Oxley (R-OH), Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY), Frank Lucas (R-OK), Ray LaHood (R-IL), Paul Ryan (R-WI), Randy Neugebauer (R-TX), and Dan Boren (D-OK) visited New Delhi and Jaipur, India April 9-12.
First time travelers to India, their visit has been an opportunity to study the transforming relations between the United States and India and to learn more about key bilateral issues. The delegation discussed with their hosts recent initiatives between the two countries, including how the civil nuclear cooperation initiative can help ensure tighter control of nuclear technology in the future while improving India's ability to provide energy to its growing economy.
During their visit, the delegation met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora, and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.
