American coach brings basketball knowledge to Indian children

May 5, 2009

New Delhi - Some North India school children and their coaches will start summer vacation this year with a special treat: basketball instruction from a top American coach on May 6 and 8-10 in New Delhi and Patiala.

The head of New York City's JD Walsh Basketball School will conduct workshops in conjunction with the Basketball Federation of India in New Delhi on May 6.  Boys and girls from Delhi's public schools will participate.  Mr. Walsh will then move on to Patiala for clinics at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports from May 8 to 10.

In addition, Mr. Walsh's school is sponsoring a three-year program aimed at orphaned youth in India.  The first phase began in June 2007 in Chinar, an orphanage in Srinagar, Kashmir.  Elizabeth Fitzsimmons, Spokesperson at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi applauded the program, saying "there is no better way for people to get to know one another than through the competition and teamwork of sports."

Founded in 1997, the JD Walsh Basketball School started with the mission of teaching New York City kids the fundamentals of basketball, and the values of teamwork and good sportsmanship derived from it.  Over time, the school has grown beyond national and political boundaries and touched the lives of more than 8,000 youth in India, China, the Dominican Republic, Taiwan, Israel and the United States.
