American Center Celebrates the Environment with EcoFestival

May 29, 2009

NEW DELHI - The American Center, in collaboration with Kriti, will open its doors at 24 Kasturba Gandhi Marg to the citizens of Delhi on June 2 and 3 to celebrate the environment with a festival featuring art exhibits, displays of natural products, an environmental documentary, workshops for children, as well as a dance performance and music concert.

A highlight of the festival will be the performance by In Step Dance Company on June 2, led by American ballet dancer Emily Rasmussen. On June 3, the festival will feature a talk on Delhi's birds by Ranjit Lal. Rounding out the festival on June 3 will be the premiere of "Kosi Katha," a documentary film telling the story of the Kosi floods. "Kosi Katha" will be followed by an acoustic music concert by Nikhil Morke, Clarin Gonsalves and others.

The EcoFestival will have on display natural products made by local groups, including organic bags, jute stationery, t-shirts, toys, decorations and greeting cards. There will also be art exhibits and installations on tracing waste, the birds and trees of New Delhi, as well as the Alaskan glaciers. The Centre for Creative Expression's workshops will teach children how to convert newspapers into bags and art, make their own ecoprints, and create environmental expressions with music.

On June 4 and 5, the American Center will also partner with the environmental NGO Swechha for its annual World Environment Day celebrations at the India Habitat Center. The event, Yamunotsav 2009, will feature a Climate Solutions Mela, showcasing a wide number of green products and services, as well as musical performances by leading Indian and international artists including Bobby Cash, Rahul Ram of Indian Ocean, Swanan Kirkire and Piyush Misra.
