July 4, 2009
New Delhi – The United States invites India to its first America’s Polo Cup in the spring of 2010 in Washington D.C., it was announced at the American Center today. The U.S. Charge d’Affaires Peter Burleigh, accompanied by the captain of the U.S. polo team and representatives of ABSI Corporation, sponsors of the America’s Polo Cup, led the Pin-up Ceremony for the Indian players.
“In celebration of our shared values of friendship, sportsmanship and competition, the Indian team will travel to Washington next June to compete on the National Mall in front of thousands of fans”, Charge d’Affaires Peter Burleigh told the distinguished gathering. The American team will return to India in early 2011 for an official rematch.
International polo in the Washington D.C. area has been an historic and diplomatic tradition since 1923, when it received its first patronage from President Harding. The America’s Polo World Cup Championships is an invitational event in which the U.S. and the visiting country compete annually in the spring. The United States won 4-2 in the 2009 championship match against Australia earlier this year.
