American Center to celebrate an eco-friendly July 4th

July 2, 2009

NEW DELHI -- With the desire of being a good citizen of New Delhi, the American Center will celebrate an eco-friendly July 4th this year. In keeping with its commitment to conserve energy, power saving measures will be observed at all functions to mark the American Independence Day. The clean environment agenda is one of U.S. President Obama's top priorities, and is a programming theme throughout the current year at the American Center.

The decision not to illuminate the American Center building for the July 4th celebration, shutting off the building's air conditioning at 5:30 pm on workdays and installing new energy-efficient passenger elevators are part of the overall energy conservation efforts being implemented by the American Center. By the end of 2009, there is a plan to install a completely new energy efficient HVAC system for the American Center building which will involve renovation of the main electrical distribution system with equipment that will reduce the building's electric consumption by almost 30-40%.

During the last three months, auto sensors on all plumbing flushing systems have been installed in the American Center building making these units 25% more efficient than those using manual flush.

Over the past several years, the American Embassy has been successful in its goal to save energy by putting in place conservation measures like the installation of energy efficient light bulbs and solar heating panels and its use of motor sensor detectors on many of the overhead lighting systems which ensure automatic shutdown whenever a room is unoccupied. Water harvesting wells and sprinkler systems are also in place at the Embassy which save a thousand liters of water annually. Recycling and use of CNG fuel wherever possible are other such efforts the American Embassy has made towards accomplishing the goal of conserving energy for a brighter tomorrow.
