05 September 2005
New Delhi - U.S. Ambassador David C. Mulford met late this afternoon with Foreign Secretary Saran to express the appreciation of President Bush and the American people for India's gracious offers of assistance to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
"India's offers of help are sincerely appreciated and say much about the heart and spirit of India and the deepening of people-to-people ties between our two countries," the Ambassador said.
The U.S. Government has accepted the Indian government's offer of $5 million to the American Red Cross for use in disaster relief in the wake of the hurricane. According to Ambassador Mulford, India's offer to send a medical team, water treatment units, medical supplies and public health officers is being actively considered by U.S. disaster management officials. In the meantime, he said, U.S. Embassy officials are working with their Indian counterparts on the administrative and logistical details to ensure the expedited delivery of any needed supplies.
