USEFI to Observe International Education Week
November 11, 2005
NEW DELHI -- The United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI) will celebrate and promote international education and exchanges across India during International Education Week, November 14 - 18, 2005. USEFI's offices in Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and USEFI Satellite Centers in Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Hyderabad will hold a series of events across India to engage students, scholars and professionals in dialogue about international education. USEFI will involve current U.S. Fulbrighters and Indian alumni in its IEW activities.
International Education Week (IEW) is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.
This year's theme, "International Education: Improving Student Achievement Around the World," marks the sixth annual commemoration of International Education Week, said U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings. USEFI's IEW activities are featured on its website www.fulbright-india.org.
Highlights of IEW include:
-- Student-centered programs featuring international education, such as special workshops for undergraduate and graduate students in Hyderabad, Ranchi, Surat and the metros, an inter-school web designing contest and a debate in Delhi, a quiz competition in Chennai, and a writing workshop in Ahmedabad.
-- A workshop on "Conservation of Bio-Diversity" at Simlipal Biosphere Reserve, Orissa; Lecture on "Empowering the Learner Towards Excellence" at Kurukshetra University; "High School Science Education for Careers and Citizenship" and the East-West Center Alumni Conference in New Delhi.
"USEFI is committed to enhancing educational and cultural exchange among the people of India and the U.S. Exchange visits have been the backbone of international education. The 4,000 Fulbright alumni in India contribute to this effort and welcome more than 100 U.S. scholars who visit each year," says USEFI Executive Director Prof. Jane E. Schukoske.
Prof. Schukoske observed, "USEFI is celebrating IEW with activities across India. Indian students clearly appreciate the importance of U.S. education to their careers. They often comment that study in the U.S. is truly international education because of classmates and faculty from across the globe. The cross-cultural understanding that grows out of international education is a key tool for building a more peaceful and equitable world."
