East-West Center to Hold Regional Conference November 15-18 in New Delhi
New Delhi -- The East-West Center (EWC) in cooperation with the U.S. Educational Foundation in India (USEFI) will hold a regional alumni conference in New Delhi November 15-18. Some 150 alumni from 10 countries and a delegation led by EWC President Charles E. Morrison will participate.
With the theme of "Building a South Asia Community in a Global Context," the conference will explore major issues facing South Asia and consider ways to assist in their resolution. It will feature speakers and various presentations from India and abroad and foster networking opportunities that will serve as a bridge between diverse cultures.
On November 15, there will be two public events, plus a special one-day meeting for EWC Association chapter leaders from throughout South Asia. The three-day conference itself starts November 16 and will be held at the India Habitat Centre.
The EWC will hold two public events on November 15 at the India International Centre (IIC). From 9:30-10:30 a.m., an informational program will be held specifically for students and young scholars interested in EWC opportunities. At 11 a.m. that same morning, EWC President Morrison will speak on the Center's research activities, which are multinational and collaborative in nature and involve experts and institutions from the U.S. and throughout the Asia Pacific region. The research program focuses on four broad areas: politics, governance and security; economics; environmental change, vulnerability, and governance; and population and health.
Since the Center's founding in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1960, more than 1,900 Indian professionals, researchers and students have joined others from some 50 countries as participants in Center programs. India has six EWC alumni chapters, which are part of an international network of professionals who have a past affiliation with the Center. The Delhi chapter is led by Dr. Mala Kapur Shankardass. Many Indian and other EWC alumni occupy key positions in government, business, journalism and education. The Center contributes to a peaceful, prosperous and just Asia Pacific community. Established by the U.S. Congress to provide opportunities for study, training and research, the EWC is a public, nonprofit research and education institution with an international board of governors. Tarun Das, Chief Mentor of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi, serves on the board.
EWC funding comes from the U.S. Government in addition to support provided by private agencies, individuals and corporations, and a number of Asian and Pacific governments.
