U.S. Ambassador Roemer comments on U.S. Commercial Nuclear Mission to India
December 11, 2009
New Delhi -- Today, delegates of the fifth U.S. Commercial Nuclear Mission to India, representing 30 of the leading commercial nuclear suppliers from the United States and showcasing some of the world's leading technologies, concluded a week-long visit to India. During the visit, the delegation, led by Westinghouse Electric's Vice President Meena Mutyala and GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy's Senior Vice President Daniel Roderick, met with government officials and business counterparts in Delhi and Mumbai.
The mission is a partnership of the U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC), the Nuclear Energy Institute, the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service, and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). During its final meeting in Mumbai, the delegation recognized the contribution of nuclear scientist and Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar, who played a crucial role in bringing to fruition the U.S.-India civil nuclear deal.
U.S. Ambassador to India Timothy J. Roemer welcomed the delegation, the largest of its kind to India, noting, "This visit invigorates and underscores the commitment President Obama and Prime Minister Singh made in Washington for our countries to realize the full potential and aspirations of our landmark civilian nuclear agreement. We hope to complete this landmark agreement soon. This agreement will lead to the development of important clean energy alternatives and greater access to affordable energy for the people of India, while creating jobs and economic opportunities for the citizens of both our countries. It is a strategic win-win for both countries.
The United States of America looks forward to working steadfastly together with India -- building on our unprecedented accomplishments across the full range of human endeavor -- in a global and enduring partnership that enriches and secures the lives, wellbeing and prosperity of the citizens and future generations of our countries while shaping the 21st Century."
