Steven White joined the Foreign Service in November 1975.  His first tour as a Consular and Political and Economic Reporting Officer in the Netherlands Antilles was followed by an assignment as Budget Officer in Brussels, Belgium.  His onward assignment was to the State Department as a Budget Analyst in the Office of the Comptroller where his accounts included the East Asia and Pacific and African bureaus, as well as the International Boundary and Water Commission.

Subsequent assignments were to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (1983-86) as Supervisory General Services Officer where he facilitated the move of the Embassy from Jeddah to new facilities in Riyadh, and Prague, Czechoslovakia from 1987-90, where as Administrative Officer he witnessed the “Velvet Revolution” and managed the ensuing growth of the post.  Following a tour as Supervisory GSO in London, he was Administrative Officer in Kuala Lumpur.  In 1995 he was promoted into the Senior Foreign Service.

From 1996-2000, Mr. White served as Counselor for Management Affairs in Vienna, Austria where he directed the Joint Administrative Office in support of our embassy to Austria and missions to the OSCE and the International Atomic Energy Agency (UNVIE).  During that assignment, he led negotiations with the Austrian government that extended diplomatic privileges to administrative and technical staff at post, and created a security zone around the Chancery.  In 2000, he was assigned as Minister-Counselor for Management Affairs to the American Mission in New Delhi, India, where he was responsible for provision of administrative support services to the Embassy and three consulates.  He was promoted to the rank of Minister-Counselor in 2001.

In Cairo from August 2004 – May 2006, Mr. White directed one of the largest management sections in the world.  As Cairo’s acting DCM in January 2006, he coordinated USG civilian and military relief efforts in the wake of the Red Sea ferry disaster earlier that year. 

From July 2006 until May 2007, Mr. White was assigned as Management Counselor in Baghdad, Iraq, where he directed administrative services for the joint Department of State and Multi-National Force – Iraq mission in the former Republican Guard Palace in the International Zone as well as ten Provisional Reconstruction teams and Regional Embassy Offices in the provinces. 
 
Steven White holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Virginia (1975), and has received numerous State Department awards.  He is married to Kimberly Ryder White, whose father was a Foreign Service Officer.  They have one daughter, Eden (age 16).  His interests include the history of architecture, opera, and horse riding.  He has formally studied French, Czech, and German.
